I am getting married this september, and I purchased my dress LAST july...so anytime is good...but if you are planning on losing any weight or anything like that, I would wait for a few months to buy it...just to see where you will be in a few months with sizing.

Finally Mrs. Rosell!!

The shops I have been to have said that dresses can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months to come in. The reasons you might wait until closer to your date are: a) your weight might fluctuate; and b) you may change your mind and end up a 2 dress bride. The reason to buy early is that it gives you enough time to reorder if something terrible happens (the store goes bankrupt, they order the wrong dress). I would imagine that stuff like that is very rare but anything is possible. So I guess it depends on your situation.

I'm getting married in August 2009 and I just ordered my dress this week. They said it will take 6 months to come in which leaves me enough time for alterations and for anything unexpected.

Good Luck!

I'm getting married Aug/09 and I ordered my dress a few weeks ago.  I worry a little about the sizing since a year is a long time but I figure the seamstress can deal with it if I have lost weight!

I am also an october 2009 bride (or september, we dont have a venue or date yet but its fall for sure) and i started looking a month and a half ago, mostly because my future sister in law is down only once a year and i wanted her to be with me. then i got addicted. just found 2 yesterday, one of which i will probably buy but i am not sure when either. i tend to gain weight, though  not much in the last year so i am afraid to buy too early, i know i wont be loosing any... ill probably wait 3 or 4 months then go order, they said it would take 5 to come in for that designer. plus my mom would probably freak if i tried to buy something now.

so definitely not too soon to start looking but i would take a good long time to look and try on a bunch of different styles because nothing is worse, or more wasteful than being a two dress bride (no offence intended to anyone).

I got mine about 7 months before the wedding, I got if off the rack.  If you are ordering from a store that has to order it in, Id suggest you give yourself anywhere from 6-12 months to do it.
