How much do you and DH spend on groceries-on average-a week?

Please include if your cost includes more than just the two of you.

I ask this cause my friends think DH and I spend too much money on groceries.

I agree that we could cut costs and save money if we bought canned food from a store like No Frills, but DH and I really enjoy grocery shopping together Saturday mornings and part of the enjoyment is going to a nice grocery store, that's organized well and doesn't smell like rotting meat (for some reason the No Frills close to me REEKS and is always crowded).

On average I say that we spend $150 dollars a week. That being said, it includes breakfast, lunch, dinner everyday but perhaps one dinner out/families house.

Also, DH is insistent on buying as much organic produce as possible-which is obviously more expensive.

AND we do buy a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Also-that's on average. Some weeks are less expensive, some are more. We also buy our steaks, lamb and shrimp from Costco. Sausages and organic chicken from Loblaws, and everything else at Michael Angelos. In the summer we go to local farms to get some fresh vegetables.

As you can see, food is very important to us haha.

I don't think $150 on average is alot. That's $75 each. That works out to $3.50 each a meal. Not bad when those dinners include steak, lamb, chicken, shrimp, etc. Considering we spent $150 on our anniversary dinner-ONE MEAL-I think $150 is reasonable.

I know we could save costs if we bargain hunted-and sometimes we do-for example if my favourite drink is on sale we'll go to No Frills and stock up cause it wont rot.

Just curious to see what others spend.

DH and I spend about the same, give or take $20, depending on if we are out of things like paper towel, cleaning stuff.. ect.

We would rather have lots in the house to make instead of getting take out all the time which would end up costing more...

I probably spend at least that a week. Funny, I just looked and I spent 300$ in two weeks, so we're right around the same thing.

I buy mostly fresh veggies and fruit, bread, juice, fresh pasta and either seafood or chicken (I don't eat beef or pork so therefore neither does pooooor DH!).

I probably go to the grocery store about 2-3 times a week for fresh stuff. I don't think I EVER buy anything in cans and don't buy prepared things like lasagna or stuff like that.

Usually I go to the store near me, Metro or Provigo (I'm in Montreal) and go to Costco for the chicken breasts or big things of salmon. I like Loblaws but always come out of there with things that I don't need. But it's such a fun store to browse through. I also the ethnic grocery stores here in Montreal. There's greek grocery stores, chinese, lebanese.......

I LOVE cooking and baking and LOVE grocery shopping. I prefer to go on my own as DH just wants to rush through. So unfortunately I also end up paying for it all too!

We grocery shop once a week and spend an average of $50-$75. Every week we plan out all our meals so we're never buying more than we need and therefore never wasting food. Before we started meal planning we would spend about $250 every 2-3 weeks and so much of our food would end up in the garbage because we'd buy stuff and forget we had it in the fridge, or just end up eating out. It works really well to plan our meals because if you know what you're going to have you can start prepping ahead of time to cut down on time when you're actually cooking- it's great! My only problem is just trying to come up with meal ideas!

ETA: We do all our grocery shopping at Superstore- I'm mostly happy shopping there but I'm rarely impressed with their questionable selection of fruits and veggies

Food is something DH and I do NOT skimp out on! haha We love to cook and we love grocery shopping etc, and we spend about 400-500 a month on food for the two of us, sometimes less sometimes more. I don't like frozen dinners and stuff either though, and we try to make something new out of a cookbook every so often which makes it so that we have to buy extra spices etc that we don't have or something.
