I'm finding picking a honeymoon place to be very frustrating! My fiancé and I were originally going to stay in Canada for our honeymoon, but to travel in Canada has turned out to be very expense!
So we have decided to Go to the Mayan Riviera Mexico.
I think we narrowed it down to two resorts. The Excellence Riviera Cancun and the El Dorado Royale, a spa resort by Karisma.

Could anyone give their reviews on these resorts please!

Thanks

i haven't been to either, but I know what you mean!  FH adn I nixed an all inclusive last summer to save money, and spent WAY more driving out east from Toronto!!!

I have been to the Mayan though, and i'd like to recommend a resort that used to be called the Reef Coco Beach... it was amazing!

What's nice about these is that they're both Adult Only resorts, and as a PP mentioned, it's always a bonus when you're on your honeymoon!

The El Dorado Royale is spectacular. They have a laid back, but not lazy atmosphere.  They're very hospitable there and truly strive to make your stay enjoyable.  It's very romantic as well...

Having said that, the Excellence Riviera is just as beautiful. If you're looking for the luxurious Mediterranean style, then the Excellence should be your top pick.

It really all depends on what you'd like to experience on your honeymoon. I've been to both, and love them equally.

Hope this helps!

I've never been to either of these resorts, but I would like to tell you about the one that we *were* at. We did as much research as we could about the Mayan Riviera, and there are so many resorts there that it's next to impossible to choose one. We also wanted an adults-only or couples-only resort, but in the end, we chose one that fit our budget: the adults or couples-only resorts are more expensive and for very little reason (that we could see).

The resort we stayed at was about 45 minute ride from the Cancun airport, and about 20 minutes from Playa Del Carmen. The resort was not set up as a "traditional" hotel, but rather there were many smaller buildings spread over the property with 8 units in each building. All units either had a patio (main level) or a deck (upper). Only one building had more than 8 units and was also 3 floors high, and it was obviously meant for a different clientelle, as they were all wheel-chair friendly (no stairs leading to them) and also these ones were the "suites" (with a seperate bedroom & a living room). There are 37 of these smaller buildings and around 50 (I'm not really sure) of the suites.
We stayed in a building that was nearer the beach than the main building and we were a very short walk from the pool, pool bar, snack restaurant & beach. It was very quiet being away from the hub of activity, and usually around 6:00 at night (when it started to get dark and people were off getting ready for dinner), it was quiet and essentially deserted. We took quite a few walks around the pool or on the beach at this time of the night and saw only a small number of people.
The beach itself wasn't fantastic, as it had a wall to keep the ocean from washing away the actual beach area, and there is still some damage showing from the 2005 hurricanes, but the pool was better anyhow, as it has a nice bar! There's actually 2 pools, one has the bar and the other doesn't. The 2nd (non-bar) pool also has a very shallow section and they did all the games & the scuba lessons in there, so the crowds tended to be on that side. There is also a children's area, but in all honesty, though I know there were kids there, we didn't even notice them. Like at all.
There are 3 "theme" restaurants as well as the main buffet; Japanese, Argentinian & Mexican. The Japanese one is in the main building, and as we don't do Japanese, I can't speak for how the food is there, but lots of other people really enjoyed it. We went to the Argentinian one twice (it's right on the beach and *very* romantic), and the Mexican one once. The food was awesome at both, as well as at the buffet.

If you're booking this resort through a tour company, go direct to Nolitours; they are Canadian company so the resort has many many Canadians (I think about 80% of the people there were Canadians). Also, we got a screaming good deal (less than half price) by booking only 3 weeks before we wanted to go. I'd highly recommend booking closer to your departure date to get a better deal, regardless of where you want to go.

Now.... the good stuff...
This resort is called H10 Hacienda Maya.
Here is their website:

Hope that helps,

Hi Rhonda,
We were at a travel agent this weekend and after describing my perfect
honeymoon he highly recommend the excellence resort.  He said I would
be treated like a princess and experiences the luxuries I would expect
from a 5 star resort.  After speaking with him I did some research on
trip advisor and discovered that there is a major construction site
behind the resort and there have been some recent issues with ants in
the rooms.  I am starting to reconsider my options especially given
the prices.  We were quoted $4500 for 10 days without flights.  Not
sure how this compares to your pricing or the feedback you were given
but hope it helps!  I would be curious to hear what you decided and
will keep you posted should I find out more details!
Meg
