We are going on a cruise for our honeymoon. It says that casual resort wear is the dress code. Is that really just in the dining? What about when your on shore? Does it matter?

What have other people taken?

We went on a cruise over Christmas and it was such a pain to pack, lol!  No, it really wasn't too bad...just a lot of clothes to take (ie. garment bag for suits & dresses and extra dress shoes).
Our cruise had two formal dinners, three semi- formal and three dress-casual.  Formal meant suits or tuxes for men and formal dress for women.  Semi-formal was full suit for men & dress/pantsuit for women and casual was no jacket for men but dress pants and shirt and a casual dress or pant-outfit for women.  I would check with the  cruise-line for their description of dressware.  Jeans were prohibited in the dining room, however there was always the few people who completely disregarded it.  Clothing on the remainder of the cruise ship was pretty much whatever you wanted, with the exception of places that required shirt and shoes, etc.  Shore dress was up to the person.
Again, I would check with the cruise line to get specifics.  Their website should have something, or ask the travel agent who booked it for you.

I've been on a few cruises myself. Formal night is as PP said: dresses for ladies and suits with ties for men. Casual night I would say no jeans but pants or a casual dress or casual skirt. As for a top, I'd say you're okay as long as it's not some skimpy tank top or beachwear. Lunch also seems to be a bit more casual, even in the formal dining rooms. For the restaurants on the decks, you can wear whatever you're wearing around the ship. As for what people wear around during the day, pretty much anything goes.

I always think this way: someone will always be more dressed up than me, and someone will always be more casually dressed than me

Which cruiseline are you going on?

Carnival, the ship is Glory. I think the style of clothes I've been thinking about will worlk. Its true that someone will always be more and less. We have our formal wear for the formal dinner. Then I'll take some casual sun dresses and capri pants for other times. Some jean capris for the day we go deep sea fishing

I wouldn't worry about what to wear on your excursions, that tends to be very, very casual (i.e. tank tops/shorts/bathing suits). Whatever you are comfortable in and don't mind getting dirty/wet.
