We are going to be in San Juan for a couple days before leaving on our cruise, so am wondering if any of you know of some places to stay while there, that are reasonably cheaper than the typical resort? Any thoughts? It doesn't have to have all the special extras, but just something nice, and quieter? Thanks for your help.

It's probably super expensive, but El Convento is beautiful: http://www.elconvento.com/

My mother and I went there for afternoon tea and it was so peaceful and pretty in the courtyard. There was actually a wedding ceremony being set up

Basically it's an old convent that has been turned into a hotel.

We were in Old San Juan as one of our port days on the Holland America.

I was in San Juan over Christmas and the majority of the resorts/boutique hotels I saw along the beach were in "New San Juan", whereas our cruise port was in "Old San Juan", something to consider when searching for a place as it's a bit of a cab ride (and extra cost).
