My mom & dad have been to DR lots of times...they went to the Mayan riviara two years and and were REALLY disappointed! They say it was still beautiful, but far less than DR.
They say the biggest difference was that the beaches in DR were much better maintained...
However, to me..both sound great!

I have never been to Mexico, but I went to DR and it was beautiful, and the locals were so friendly. We stayed at the Riu Mambo, it was such a nice resort.

I went to Punta Cana for my honeymoon and although it was pretty there was nothing to do off of the resort and it was very dirty. We would not go back there again.
Just the two of us... August 15, 2007.

I've never been to D.R., but I've been to Mexico 3 times, including honeymooning in Cancun, and I love it. I think you'd have a blast in the Mayan Riviera. The area is beautiful and there's tons to do (see ruins at Talum, Coba or Chichen Itza, shop in Playa del Carmen, take the ferry to Cozumel, spend the day at Xcaret, etc.)

I've never been to Mexico before but PP made a good point on the excursions you could go on...it would be quite interesting and very memorable and beautiful.. I have been to Punta Cana twice 2 different resorts and although they were beautiful resorts the food got tired after a couple of days. If your going for a week then maybe but after 3 or 4 days the same smell of the buffet day after day made my stomach turn.
