FH and I have decided to go to Ireland for our honeymoon!! (FH travels a lot and I wanted to go somewhere he's never been before.)

We haven't made the arrangements yet so I wanted to know if anyone else has been to Ireland and has some recomendations or ideas for while we're there?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!!!

I"ve never personally been.. but my friend who lived there for a year said that the most beautiful place in Ireland is Dingle.

I laughed when she told me.. and i didnt believe thats what it was called.. but she showed me her pics and it truely IS amazing!!

I've been. We stayed with Fh's family in Belfast, so I can't suggest where to stay. IF you have a chance you should see both Northern Ireland (Belfast) and Ireland.  Giant's causeway is amazaing and so there is also the guiness factory there!  So I would check out Dublin as well!

DH and I went to Ireland for 2 weeks before we were engaged...we actually got engaged there!

We spent a week in the north (my family lives in Belfast) and a week driving around. Some highlights:

-the Cliffs of Mohr (on the south west coast). So beautiful, it really takes your breath away

-The Giant's Causeway (in the North). Absolutely amazing site, can't believe it's a natural phenomenon

-Dublin city! We did the Guiness tour, St Stephen's Green, a bunch of cathedrals, Temple Bar. DO NOT worry about going to see the Book of Kells - waste of money and time IMO

-the Waterford Crystal plant (south east?) Very cool to see how they make the crystal.

You can drive through most of the island in a week if you are strict about your timing. We did 1010 miles in one week. Exhausting but worth it. Bed and Breakfasts are 100% the way to go.

We booked our trip through Royal Irish tours. We got our flight, rental car for the week and vouchers for 7 nights at various B&Bs throughout the country. They gave us a book of places that accepted the vouchers, and it made things so much easier. Plus, the B&Bs always include breakfast, and it's usually a big meal!

Have fun, and feel free to PM me for more info!

Go to Waterford (yup, PP was right, it's SouthEast) and take a tour thru the factory. I'll see if I can find the name of the "employees only" shop that sells things at a super discount. You need to ask the right person to take you there, so I'll see if I can get it from one of my girlfriends.

A day trip to Tramore would be nice too.

Depending on the time of year you are travelling, try and take in a Hurling match. It is a fast paced, somewhat primitive/barbaric sport that has a HUGE following!

Cork is a pretty city too. Lots of awesome shops & cafes!!

Thank you for all the wonderful suggestions! I just might have to PM some of you to get more details. FH and I plan on doing a lot of the travelling by foot or train and are hoping to stay in B&B's and maybe some hostels. FH likes the "rugged" type of travelling

One of the weirdest experiences (but also very cool) during my Ireland trip was going up to someones house, knocking on the door and asking if they had a room available for the night. FH and I did a week in Ireland (and a week in Scotland) in September and we loved it. We rented a car and drove around the Southern part. I recommend kissing the Blarney Stone and going to Killkenny and seeing the castle there.

Lizzard posted up lots of very very cool places to check out as well. Also Northern Ireland was beautiful and Belfast was a city that surprised me. For all the troubles and history they've been through I found the people to be very friendly and the city to be quite nice to walk around in.

If you go to Dublin you have to go to the Guiness storehouse and the Book of Kells of course but the thing that we saw that I really liked was the jail in Dublin called Kilmainham Gaol. FH found out about it in our Lonely Planet book and it turned out to be a very interesting and slightly dark place but gives you a good history behind Ireland (if you're interested in that).

Have fun though and can't wait to see pictures!!!!
