So this weekend we made the trip over from Vancouver to Victoria to view a specific property that had come up that was just beyond our range (see "unsure what to do" post) and ended up seeing around 11 houses with our realtor. Since we had decided to expand a bit beyond the "no property tax" zone, we looked at one that we loved but was a bit too expensive for us. We walked in and just knew - it has such an amazing sense of character and charm, but at the same time a really warm and modern aesthetic. Tons of room to grow, and a total turnkey but room for improvements over the years. Also in our FAVOURITE neighbourhood - our friends who we are staying with this weekend actually live just up the street, and they absolutely love it, and now we do too - cafes, pubs with live music, pocket farmers' markets and independent video stores all within 1km.

So - we found out that it was also a divorce case, so they came down WAY more than we thought they would in their initial counter ($25). That was almost our bid, so we just countered with one a couple of thousand less. We'll find out later this morning, because they had to go get the wife's signature (super messy divorce, but apparently she had 99% agreed). I REALLY hope it will all go through, will report back! We feel really calm, but then we totally didn't sleep last night - ha!

Fingers crossed!

That's how we got our new house that we just bought!! It is a new build and the couple who bought it ended up getting divorced even before they could move in so we will be the first people to ever live in it. They just wanted to sell it off so that they never have to speak to each other again so we got it for 32,000 under the asking price!!! Woohoo. My dream home for an even dreamier price lol.

Most frustrating call just now from our agent - apparently the wife is being completely unreasonable and is now refusing to sell period. Nothing to do with the price, she just wants to make life living hell for her husband. He's signed and accepted our offer, and it's good to go, but she refuses to sign. They have a court date on Wednesday to decide other matters, so it now has to go before the court and they have to order her to sign it. The court has already established that all assets must be sold and divided, so HOPEFULLY they'll just make her - both agents and the husband are all strongly for the sale, so that will all factor in.

Anyway, we're so frustrated, but hopefully it will come out ok - has anybody else been in this situation?

Thanks for your words of support, ladies. Both sets of realtors are sending in affidavits to the judge stating that the house is a fair and comparable price and that the deal should go through. Since it's already been ordered that they sell the property, this shouldn't be a problem....theoretically. They do have one son, I get the vibe that he's a teenager. The mother and son are living elsewhere, but the "deal" was that she got to stay in the house at the end of May if it wasn't sold - my guess is that she agreed to divide all property but maybe didn't think it would sell that quickly?

At this point FH and I have put a moratorium on speculating, because we'll drive ourselves nuts - it's so frustrating though, because after all our looking we finally found a home that would be ideal for us, and of COURSE it has to be the most complicated situation! I just hate that we have to be dragged along to some degree, and the uncertainty is KILLING me - it's felt like I've waited so, so long in the past year for life-things to materialize...we'll have to wait a little longer I guess.

Will update on Wednesday, in the meantime keep sending good thoughts and good-buy-stories-as-a-result-of-divorce!

So it got pushed back AGAIN today. Apparently the lawyers have now taken over and will be reaching some sort of agreement tomorrow.

I haven't slept in like five days and am totally strung out - I know that in the grand scheme of things this isn't a big deal, but it's been so emotionally draining and awful - our agent says she hasn't seen a situation quite like this.

Anyway, keep your fingers crossed for us, and hopefully tomorrow goes by more quickly than today.
