I found instructions for it that say to put sand and food colouring into a ziplock bag and kneed it until the colour is consistant, and the spread it out on cookie sheets in the sun till it's dry.

Has anyone done this? Did it actually turn out? Did the sand blow away while it was drying?

I want to get sand from our actual ceremony location, and dye it myself for a sand ceremony.

It should be fine, but if your worried maybe cover it in plastic wrap with holes poked in it for ventilation?

somebody just yesterday told me to buy coloured chalk (regular blackboard or sidewalk chalk) and roll it in sugar and it will look like coloured sand.

I haven't tried it yet but if anyone wants to try it let us know how it goes.

This was the recipe we used:

To dye sand:

1 Tablespoon liquid fabric dye or 1 teaspoon powder dye
1/2 cup sifted sand
3/4 cup hot water
Plastic cup or container

Mix dye with hot water. Add sand. Let soak for two hours. Sand will be at the bottom of the cup. Carefully pour off colored water. Dry sand by spreading it on newspaper or paper towels. After dry, pour sand into cup or paper plate.

We bought a tie-dye kit at michaels, because it was cheap, and used the dye that came with it. DH was, overzelous, and seriously mixed enough of each colour that we could sandbag the house with magenta and blue. (seriously).

We had the sand out on newspaper in our sunroom for almost a week and it still wasn't fully dry at the wedding. We did try to cook it in the oven to dry it out, which worked, but it STANK. So give your self a few weeks for it to dry. Though, as a note, we used ocean sand from the beach where he proposed, and beach sand from my cottage (which is my fav place on earth), so it may dye differently then the manufactured stuff.

Thanx I'm planning on using beach sand too, but lake sand, I don't know if it's different from ocean sand, but either way, I didn't think it would take that long to dry, thanx for the advice

Yeah, our cottage is on a lake. I didn't notice a difference in dry time between the two sands...I did notice that there were flecks of shells in the sea sand that took the dye much stronger because they were originally white. It was quite pretty.

The chalk and sugar/salt idea works well but takes a while too.  Fun for a project but if you are doing large amounts it can get tedious quickly.  You basically have to rub the salt with the chalk.  Anyway-if it's for a sand ceremony it would be fine.  I think it would work with your sand and you can get a myriad of colours.

I like the idea of using sand from your ceremony location.  If it wasn't for that, I'd just say to buy coloured sand!  LOL

Can you leave the sand inside to dry?  Do you have anywhere you could put it?  Might take a bit longer, but you wouldn't have to worry about it blowing away.
