So we are moving into our new place at the end of the week and went to sign our mortgage papers etc with the lawyer last week. Through out our entire home search we never once thought about property taxes and our realtor never mentioned them. We found out when we went to the lawyers that we are going to be paying $2700 a year in property taxes!!!! I nearly died when I read it! How is that even possible. We moved from a bigger city to a small town. I would have thought that property taxes would go down. We don't even have garbage pick up or mail delivery in our subdivision because it's outside of town. Is there anyway that there could have been a mistake with the assessment since it's a new home?!?
Just the two of us... August 15, 2007.

Wow that is quite a bit! Most people I know only pay about half of that. There are alot of things that affect the amount you pay but if your really thinking its wrong then have it checked

We are going to be looking at $3500-#4000 in taxes! I think my parents pay almost $3000 in a smaller town as well.

| You said it. You're moving to a SMALLER town. I've been told that smaller towns do not have the industries to support property taxes, therefore, homeowners take the brunt of it. Welcome to Durham. Durham is VERY expensive when it comes to property taxes....the homes are cheap, but the property taxes aren't. I am in a 1575sq ft SEMI detatched right now, and we anticipate our taxes will be at $3500. It's robbery and it's disgusting if you ask me, when you compare it to what people in much bigger houses in Toronto pay... awwww....such is life...

My dad pays almost 15,000. He went to court to fight it even and they wouldn't bring it down. Yes he has a big house on large land, but come on, 15,000 is ridiculous.
