...sorta the same rip off as when you are a first time homebuyer and you have to pay a land transfer fee....but i dont OWN any lander to transfer from...transfer implys going from one thing to another...i dont have anything to transfer....stupid....HAHAA..

Look into the First Time Homebuyers Land Transfer Fee Rebate. Apparently even people buying resale homes can now qualify for this. It rebates your LTT up to $2000. Got this info from our lawyer today, and am filling out the application as we speak

Has this been approved in Ontario yet? My lawyer didnt think it had been approved yet and we took posession last week.  His assistant will be holding onto the forms until the bill is approved?? Does this make sense to anyone? LOL

Our lawyer (we just signed the papers on the weekend and don't take possession until July) said that it has come into effect.  We only heard about it through our mortgage broker and we are glad we did!

Fabulous! I will call our lawyer and see when they are sending the paperwork in

I would never live in a small town unless it had alot of industry or businesses to help with property taxes. My parents still live in a small town and they pay more in property taxes than their friends who live in St. Albert (really nice city close to Edmonton but alot nicer than Edmonton) and the properties are pretty much the same. I pay property tax for my condo in Edmonton but yeah we even pay tax on our parking spot. Its redonkulous.

I'm in Mississauga and our property taxes are pretty good considering we have a fairly big back yard.  We pay just over $2000 a year.

ah yes, property tax

We purchased a new home and took posession in June 2007. We had to pay retroactive property tax in the amount of $1800 because the property could not be assessed until the home was built and then once it was assessed, it was determined that we had to pay $1800 on top of the $4700 we are paying for this year! Thank goodness for the monthly payment option whereby it can be distributed over 11 months - but only after your entire balance is paid first.

I've also heard that smaller towns pay more because there are less people to support service costs.

I had no idea that existed. I will definitely be looking into that when my time comes to buy a home. That's good info to know- thank you for sharing!

I think it's fairly new sometime in December of 2007 they amended it to include resale homes. Check HERE for more info!
