My DH and I are considering putting in a hot tub in our backyard.  It's a pricey venture and I am just wondering for those who may have one...does it get used enough to justify the expense?  Do you use it year-round?

If we get one, it will be a salt-water system to avoid the chemicals and we would build an enclosure of some type so it could be used year-round.  Any comments or suggestions would be welcome!

I think it really depends on the two of you. We have a hot tub and an in-ground pool. We use the pool in the summer, but the hot tub isn't running at all. Part of that though, is that we're both generally pretty hot people and wouldn't enjoy a hot tub on a regular basis. (We didn't put it in, it came with the house.) My dad loves hot tubs though, and when my parents had a place with one, he used it 2-3 times a week. Now that they're in an apartment (and he's not responsible for the maintenance and so doesn't feel guilty if he doesn't use it), I think he uses it less than once a week.

We have some friends with one though, who use it about 3-5 times a week most of the time. I don't know much about hot tubs in general, but they really liked thiers because it's always at the same temperature and is well-insulated so it's easy to keep it heated. I think with some you need to heat them ahead of time if you don't keep them hot. (Might be wrong about that, though...)

I don't know if that helps at all... I think the key is making it as easy to use as possible, though - ie. keep it warm, easy to get to, don't have to track through the house all wet, etc.

Last year we debated on hot tub vs. pool, the pool (meaning me)won....except Christmas eve, I was at my friends house, drinking champagne in her hot tub!! She has one with fountain, lights, music...yeah, I kinda regretted my decision at that time

Oh, and theirs is outside, no closed in place, and we live in Quebec....it still was fine.

Thanks for the replies.  My DH really likes the idea and thinks we would use it several times a week to unwind after work...but I am worried that it would be a novelty at first but then we wouldn't end up using it.  We have some more investigating to do for sure.

Anyone else?

We bought a hot tub last year in lieu of a honeymoon.  We also have an inground pool, and I can assure you, we used that hot tub a few nights a week.  Since we got it shortly before the wedding, it was sooooo nice to unwind with an ice cold Smirnoff ice at night in it.  Then I got preggo, and we haven't used it since the fall.  Not sure how much use I'll get out of it this summer with a baby, but I'm sure DH will still use it.

Hope that helps!

We don't but my parents do. They don't use it very often but my brothers and sister do with their friends (22, 20 and 17). We're thinking about putting one in but not until we have a fence and landscaping first.

my parents had one and I used it every so often. They Have friends that literally use theirs every day and love it. My parents ended up selling theirs because they did not use it. It really depends on if you desire to unwind at the end of the day, enjoy baths etc. or if you will be bothered buy bathing suits and towels and dripping water in the hosue etc.

Long term engagment = Long term stress!!!!!

I wouldn't get either a pool or a hot tub cause I'm all about eliminating work/stress in my life! LOL BUT.... that said, if someone else was maintaining these toys for me I would be more inclined to have a pool.  I'm not a huge fan of jumping into a hot tub in the winter when it's freezing out, and I DO enjoy a nice hot bath.  I find that I can't relax in a hot tub cause it's TOO HOT, and would much rather a pool.

I've never had a pool before, but I've had a hot tub - it went unused and in the summer we filled it up with COLD water and pretended we had a pool lmao
