I think a symbolic ceremony is for people that are already married. A lot of people get a justice of the peace in canada, then go away and have their ceremony.

We did a symbolic ceremony in Punta Cana, so I can't help with price details but in PC the symbolic ceremony is less expensive because you aren't paying for the judge's fee. For all intents and purposes the ceremony is exactly the same, our guests wouldn't have known the difference. We got married here four days before leaving, as we needed a marriage certificate right away, we couldn't wait the many months for one to arrive from Dominican Republic. We will celebrate the day we got married in PC, that is the ceremony that has the meaning for us. It was the simpler way for us to go about it and I understand many destination couples are doing it this way.

| We are also having a symbolic ceremony..for the reasons mentioned above..also...since I was not born in Canada, I would have to go to the consulate in Ottawa to get a birth certificate..which will be a hassle...
