Hello Ladies! I am just wondering if those who have experienced infertility and seen an OBYN (and not a fertility specialist) can tell me what the first (and proceeding) steps are....?

To those who were waiting results, we finally got DH's sperm count back and it's normal! Better than normal, in fact! He He...

So, that starts me rolling on my side of things. My period has been really wacky lately (was 32d cycle & now its been 45d, 39, 32, 44, etc) so it makes it really difficult to plan for OV...(but my period is always 3 days in length and consistent in that regard)

And I've had u/s in the past (3 yrs ago) and was told I did not have cysts and/or endometriosis...

We have been TTC for 11 months, however, due to DH's job (He travels ALL over Canada) we miss A LOT of cycles as he's usually away the 1 week I need him (ARGH!!!!) So, being realistic and honest, I'd have to say we have only 'got' it dead on maybe 4 months total. So, I know this definitely factors in.

And ppl have told us to "try to plan to have him maybe stay home for a few days around OV time" but it doesn't work that way...and with my periods wacky I can't plan! Plus...DH totally loves his job and will always travel so chances are (and it feels like) it could take us years at this rate! LOL

Anyway, long story short....My GP explained that infertility investigation is a 2 step process with step 1 being you go to an OBGYN where they check you out 'structurally' (uterus, lining, etc) and then once they do the "groundwork" and are satisfied that nothing structurally is wrong, THEN you get referred to a fertility specialist where the 'invasive' sort of testing/procedures start (and costly!).

I see my OBGYN on May 21 for the 1st time for this.....

Any comments/ideas on what to expect? (Besides taking my family history) What was your experience? Thanks for reading!

I haven't been through this, but maybe you could travel with him sometimes when he goes away just a little romantic getaway type thing...you have probably already thought about that though. My husband work shifts so I know it can be frustrating.

Married the love of my life. Now Mrs. McQueen!
Now just waiting for baby!

Yes....it definitely can get frustrating at times....but on the other hand, I realize he loves his job and that this is a part of life....argh! he he

I have no idea when I am getting my periods so I couldn't even really plan to go with him....plus, sometimes he goes last minute and my work would need way more notice than that....so sadly, it doesn't work

I've been through it all .... from tests with my ob/gyn to surgery and more tests with my fertility specialist.

I think you basically want to know and rule out if you have any issues with your own body that could lead to infertility.  If you have no issues, then I'd say you're a victim of poorly timed sex with your DH.

In order to rule out issues for yourself, you should ask for the dye test so they can see if your tubes are open or closed.  You also want to rule out pcos and endometriosis, so ask about that too.

As for your lengthy periods ... they might be able to regulate your cycle better by putting you on a med called prometrium. It's used to induce a period. They also use it during fertility treatment to build up the uteran lining once a pregnancy is achieved. (just so you know what it's for). I found that when I was not having regular periods, my ob/gyn put me on prometrium and I've been like clockwork ever since ... usually 30 day cycles now, except for the first one which was 29 days long and then 1 that was 32 days long.  But averaged out, I'm typically 30 days long now.

I'm not sure what other info you want to know about ... just ask, I'll be happy to share my experiences.

Good luck. I'm hoping you have no issues and it's just poorly timed sex for you and your DH.  If I may make a suggestion ... you may want to consider having a sample of his sperm washed and frozen and try IUI if he's going to be away so often .... that is, if you don't mind spending about $500-$1000 for the proceedure and sperm washing and storage ... and don't want to wait months and months to see if it will happen naturally.  Given your situation and his work schedule and absences ... I'd say perhaps that IUI might be your one of the better options although not guaranteed to work all the time.  As you can see, there are a lot of options to consider once you know what's going on with yourself.

Again, good luck!!!

Thank you so much Mrs. M!

Our DR did tell us that we would probably be a good candidate for doing IUI if we wanted results sooner than later.

So, now I wonder if an OBGYN or specialist will do that right away or if they will make us wait...?

I do believe (and of course, hope) it's entirely poor timing...but alas, that will be hard to correct lol thus, the hope of IUI...

So, you have done IUI? Do you mind sharing what all is involved in that? (Injections, etc?) And where are you located? I am in the Niagara Region so my closest fertility center is either Hamilton, then Toronto, & London. Which are all amazing facilities so I hear....

And thank you for mentioning prometrium....I used to be on the Depro Provera injection, which thins and eventually removes the lining in your uterus.... So I've been off of it 2 yrs now but maybe my lining isn't 'normal thickness' yet?...So we could be having a problem with implantation if my lining is too thin...Can't wait to go on May 21st and see what he says! I hope he is a good OBGYN --sympathetic, considerate, and not condescending...so hard to find a DR you feel totally comfortable with....
