Pregnancy

It is especially important that you are receiving enough vitamins when you become pregnant and that you continue to receive the right amount of vitamins, especially folic acid, throughout your pregnancy. The healthy growth and development of the fetus depend on a steady supply of nutrients from the mother. However, taking large amounts of a dietary supplement in pregnancy may be harmful to the mother and/or fetus and should be avoided.

Your health care professional may recommend that you take folic acid alone or as part of a multivitamin supplement before you become pregnant and during early pregnancy. Folic acid may reduce the chances of your baby being born with a certain type of birth defect (neural tube defects).

Breast-feeding

It is especially important that you receive the right amounts of vitamins so that your baby will also get the vitamins needed to grow properly. However, taking large amounts of a dietary supplement while breast-feeding may be harmful to the mother and/or baby and should be avoided.

Dosing - For Canada
Adult and teenage males—150 to 220 mcg per day.
Adult and teenage females—145 to 190 mcg per day.
Pregnant females—445 to 475 mcg per day.
Breast-feeding females—245 to 275 mcg per day.
Children 7 to 10 years of age—125 to 180 mcg per day.
Children 4 to 6 years of age—90 mcg per day.
Children birth to 3 years of age—50 to 80 mcg per day.

angelfish1...I'm so sorry. The same thing happened to me. I got pregnant within 3 months of going off the pill (that I had been on for approx. 13 years) and I miscarried early on as well. My thoughts are with you.

I was on BC pills for 11 years, went off two weeks before the wedding (Aug. 20, 2005). Used condoms until after our honeymoon (didn't want to risk being PG while partying in the Caribbean.) And started trying to conceive upon our return Sept 24 2005. We got our BFP Oct. 31 2005, so I guess it worked right away, although it still meant I had been off BC pills for about 2 months.

Hi Tia

I stopped taking the pill the month of our wedding and three months later I conceived.   We are expecting June 16.  I thought the same thing you did.  I thought it would take me a lot longer that is why I stopped the month of the wedding.  We were married July 9 2005 and we conceived by the first week of September.   So it can happen.   I was on the pill for at least 6 years.

Hopeful
